We are Certified Maine Landscapers through MELNA and certified in erosion control by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, bringing both creativity and environmental responsibility to every project. We invest in continuing education
Continuing education is a requirement to keep our certifications. Each winter we attend classes and trade shows to acquire credits and fine tune our skills in landscape installation and maintenance practices. We strive to do the job right and in a safe manner.

I whole-heartedly recommend Michael Howland's Spring River Horticulture. The perennial bed that is a focal point of our home in Bristol stretching from one end of the house to the other had been entirely neglected due to damage several years ago from a home renovation project. It had deteriorated into a solid mass of weeds and impenetrable Siberian iris.
I contacted Michael after seeing his advertisement in the Lincoln County News in the summer of 2022. I had initially planned to meet with a few different contractors before deciding who to go. However, my initial consult with Michael was very positive and the referrals he provided were as well so I contracted Michael to create a design and provide a proposal for installation.
Michael put together a plan based on our desire for a garden that would be most colorful from July to October ( when we spend most of our time at this house).
The project required extensive removal of the existing soil and replacement with fresh weed-free soil and compost. Additionally the plan included a winding fieldstone pathway and perimeter border edging around the house structure.
By the end of October 2022 the project was completed with the exception of a few perennial which were not able to be sourced and planted until Spring 2023.
Summer 2024 is year 2 of the garden and it is absolutely spectacular. Michael's aesthetic sensibilities are spot-on.

Me and my husband would highly recommend Michael and his crew for any project. He was great to work with.
